Pump Experiement

After a day of learning of unfortunate medical conditions of a few of my family members, there was a highlight to the end of my day... a seminar put on by the Juvienal Diabetes Research Foundation!

Mom and I attended this seminar and were the first ones there.  While we were waiting, two reps from an Insulin Pump company were setting up.  Mom and I discussed them and I told her about my leariness to consider one for Ellee because I didn't understand how they attached.  We went over and talked to this rep about their pumps - tubeless pods that wirelessly communicated to the control unit.  He even said that I could try one on to see how the insertion of the dispensing tube and how the pod felt with day to day activities.  I was so estatic to hear this... that is what I need, to feel first hand what she will have to go through if we decide to use this delivery method.

He demonstrated how to fill and activate the pod (the part that is attached to the body), then how to position it.  With Mom and the two reps watching, it was time for the needle to insert the tube.  He assured me that it happens in a matter of 1/150th of a second and that I won't feel it.  I pushed the button on the control unit and waited for the defining moment.  It delays by a few seconds so that you don't tense up.  I thnk he was right about one thing, the click the unit makes when the needle activates is probably worse than the pain of the needle.  I can't say that it was completely painless because it was noticable and kind of burned for a minute or two, but not too bad.  After we sat back down I had this urge to itch the spot but just sat back and let it pass.

My goal with this is to leave it on for a few days and see how my daily activities feel with it on.  Does it get in the way?  Do I bump it?  Does anything I do bump it enough to break the seal and need to pull it off?  I decided to put it on my lower back mainly because I'm hoping it's an "out of sight, out of mind" type of thing.  I didn't consider the almost 2 hour drive home, but it didn't take long to get comfortable.  I was very surprised that the pressure didn't hurt in the least.  He did point out that this is the unit that Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears wear, so if an NFL quartback can wear it without any issues, than a 6 year old shouldn't have any problems!

Now, another defining moment... sleeping!  I want to see if it bothers me to lay on it or if my tossing and turning is an issue.
